The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences

My fourth month at Full Sail is almost over, and I am having such an amazing time here. One of the assignments for this month was to write a blog post about an industry association related to our area of interest.  I didn’t even hesitate in choosing The LatinAcademy of Recording Arts & Sciences. This important association has done so many things for the Latin community, and they are responsible for showing the world the talent of Latin music professionals.

The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences is a membership-based association that gathers music industry professionals, musicians, producers, and artists with a mission of improving the quality of condition for Latin music inside and outside the United States. The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences launched The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in 1997, with the headquarters in Miami. This association welcomes Spanish and Portuguese communities, since we have adopted their music and it has become part of our Hispanic heritage. The major program promoted by the Latin Academy that influences the industry the most is the Latin Grammy. This important event recognizes the excellence, and creates and reinforces the awareness of Latin music artists around the world. The nominees and winners are chosen with the same process as they do with the Grammys. The fundamental difference is that the membership could be international and the releases can come from the United States and internationally. The awards ceremony is a primetime telecast on US television where the Latin Academy celebrates the music quality and awareness of the Latin culture.  This important event is watched and followed by more than 100 international markets.
The Latin Academy is partner with the Grammy U organization. The Grammy U belongs to the Latin Grammy and focuses on students and people that want to be part of the Latin Grammy community. The only difference is that they can’t vote for the Latin Grammy awards. As an active member of the Grammy U, being part of this organization has helped me in my professional career. I have made professional connections in events, and hopefully it will lead to future work relationships.

The Latin Academy also leads educational programs such as the e-Latin Grammy careers and music events in more than 10,000 high schools in 11 countries. The purpose of these programs is to educate students about the Latin recording industry. Members and musicians discuss and give advices on how to work in the music industry and what it takes to become successful in this difficult business.

For artists and music professionals it is important to rely on organizations like The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. They encourage and feature Latin music and create awareness of Hispanic community around the world.
